One church leader at First Lutheran Church, 1523 Sunset Dr. Belle Plaine, said calls about the collapse began coming in just after 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The 25-foot-tall tower was built in 1966. When it fell, the brick bell tower also took out a covered walkway at the front of the church.At least a few members were inside the church for a bible study, but the collapse apparently caused by the wind took place in a different part of the church so no one was in danger. The main entrance to the church will be usable as soon as the debris gets removed.
Church leaders said they will begin removing the debris Wednesday as soon as the weather permits and an insurance adjuster gives permission. There was no damage estimate available yet.
