A Day That Will Live in Infamy

Never forgetting: Stark memories 70 years after Pearl Harbor

The Record

Navy radioman Andrew Myers, 18, had just gotten off watch on the light cruiser USS Helena on Sunday morning, Dec. 7, 1941. He was on his bunk getting ready for some shut-eye.

The Battleship Arizona toppling on Dec. 7, 1941, a day two North Jersey veterans can still recall in vivid detail.
Less than a mile away, Navy radioman John Walton, 27, was reading a newspaper while lying on his bunk at Ford Island Naval Air Station, in the middle of Pearl Harbor.
At 7:51, hell broke loose.
Japan’s attack 70 years ago claimed 2,400 American lives, sank or damaged 21 American ships, destroyed or damaged more than 300 American aircraft and thrust the nation into World War II.
A fraction of the 84,000 U.S. service members who were at Pearl Harbor are alive today to bear witness. The Pearl Harbor Survivors Association counts 2,700 members, a number that grows smaller by the week. The November issue of the association’s quarterly newsletter, the Pearl Harbor-Gram, pays tribute to 44 members who’ve died. And the national president delivers the painful and "inevitable" news: The Pearl Harbor Survivors Association will be dissolved Dec. 31.
Andrew Myers, 88, of Closter and John Walton, 97, of Paterson are among the association’s dozen New Jersey members. Hale and hearty, these proud old sailors have never met, despite their proximity and shared experience.
In separate interviews, Myers and Walton spoke of their Navy years and of Dec. 7, 1941.
Chose Navy life
Both men enlisted in late 1940. Myers was a kid out of Theodore Roosevelt High in Yonkers. Walton, a product of Paterson’s Central High, was unmarried and working for Wright Aeronautical.
Walton joined the Navy because he figured the draft would get him, and he wanted no part of the Army.
"I didn’t like the Army. I was listening to these guys from World War I, and they were talking about trench warfare. They were fighting over there in France and living in a trench. And then this one guy who was in the Navy piped up, ‘When I was in the Navy I had a clean bed and a hot meal every night.’ And I said, ‘That’s for me!’ "
Myers enlisted with three goals in mind.
"I wanted to see the world, have a gal in every port and learn a trade."
Looking back, Myers said he saw part of the world — the Pacific Ocean part — and learned a trade: electronics.
What about the gal in every port?
"Not exactly."
Walton was sent to radio school in Connecticut, and Myers was sent to radio school in San Diego. Each wound up at Pearl Harbor in the summer of 1941 — Walton at Ford Island and Myers aboard the Helena.
On Dec. 7, a torpedo ripped into the Helena, taking out a boiler room and an engine room and jolting Myers. The general quarters alarm wailed.
"The ship went up about 6 feet, and it just oscillated. I thought, geez, a boiler must have blown up. I couldn’t imagine anything other than that. I thought, geez, I better get to my battle station, and I took off. I was passing on the deck, and guys were coming out all bloody, bleeding, black. And hysterical. I thought, holy geez, these guys are really hurt. And so I got on the main deck, and I heard machine-gun bullets. What the heck is this? I got into the radio room, which was in the superstructure, and the guy said, ‘We’re at war. We’re being hit by Japanese planes.’ "
Myers was one deck below where the torpedo made impact. Twenty-nine shipmates were killed.
"When the torpedo hit, there was this tremendous blast, and it went through all the passageways. So anybody who was in the path of the blast was burnt."
No fears
Walton’s barracks on Ford Island weren’t hit, but the explosions reverberating around the harbor were unmistakable.
"We heard this plane screaming. What’s going on? This is a Sunday! And then we started hearing the bombs going off. We went to the window and see this plane flying over our heads, with the red spots on it. It was probably dropping a bomb on the ol’ Utah out there. Somebody had the sense to say, ‘Better get down to the first floor.’ That’s when it all started for us."
Walton said he doesn’t remember being scared. Myers said he was too young to be scared.
"There were guys in the radio room who were married — they were scared. They seemed to show it. I didn’t have anybody. I wasn’t married, didn’t have kids, so I didn’t have the worries they had."
Walton helped tend to the injured.
"We were in the mess hall on the first floor, and all of a sudden the guys were coming in from the battleships anchored off Ford Island. They were swimming from the battleships to land. They were full of oil, more in shock. We were helping take care of the poor guys from the battleships."
Walton, who served at Pearl Harbor with his younger brother William, said their family back in Paterson went without word about their safety.
"Nobody could send out phone calls or mail or nothing out of the base for two weeks. My family was going crazy. There were two of us there! The only satisfaction they got was when they called up their congressman and learned we weren’t on the casualty list."
Major action, minor injuries
Myers’ ship was patched up and went for dry dock repairs at California’s Mare Island Naval Shipyard. The Helena — with Myers on board — participated in a number of Pacific campaigns. A Japanese torpedo sank the Helena on July 6, 1943, during the Battle of Kula Gulf. Myers suffered cuts and bruises.
Afterward, Myers became an aviation radioman. He was in a bomber crash and cheated death once again. He climbed out of a hole in the side of plane and was picked up by Marines in a Higgins boat. His injuries? Cuts.
Walton was at Pearl Harbor until going on the seaplane tender USS Curtiss in spring 1942. He was on the Curtiss for a year. Then he became a radioman for a scout plane squadron in the Pacific. He survived Pearl Harbor and nearly four years at war with nary a scratch. "Pretty lucky, I guess," he said.
Walton was discharged in September 1945; Myers in February 1946. Walton went home to Paterson and became a city firefighter. Myers returned to Yonkers and got a job as a repairman with New York Telephone. He retired as an engineer and then sold real estate in Bergen County’s Northern Valley.
Myers was widowed in 1999, and Walton six months ago. Each lives independently and gets along and around just fine. Walton, a big, ruddy-faced man, keeps fit by gardening and going for walks in a cemetery. Myers, who wears a neat gray mustache, stays trim by taking his lady friend dancing.
Walton said that from time to time he thinks about Pearl Harbor and his Navy service in Hawaii.
"Every once in a while you lay in bed and go over it, I guess. You think about the fun you had, more than you think about the trouble out there."
Fun?
"You were young … "
Walton hopes that terrible day 70 years ago stays in the nation’s consciousness.
"Schools don’t talk about it to the kids, and the papers don’t play it up, so people forget about it. But this year, they’re trying to revive it, or whatever. Bring it all back to life again."
Myers struggled for words to describe how Pearl Harbor, and World War II, shaped him.
"I don’t know. I’m just very appreciative of my good health, and I’m happy with the little things. I’m just so happy I’m able to walk. … The Navy was a great experience. I did learn a trade, it helped me get a good job – and it’s great if you come out in one piece."

'The Exorcist's' Secret Message

That I am regularly hauled out of my burrow every Halloween like some furless and demonic “Punxsatawney Phil” always brings a rueful smile of bemusement to my lips as I lower my gaze and shake my head, for the humiliating God’s-honest truth of the matter is that while I was working on "The Exorcist," what I thought I was writing was a novel of faith in the popular dress of a thrilling and suspenseful detective story – in other words, a sermon that no one could possibly sleep through -- and to this day I haven’t the faintest recollection of any intention to frighten the reader, which many will take, I suppose, as an admission of failure on an almost stupefying, scale.

But it’s true!

Before "The Exorcist," I was a comic novelist ("Which Way to Mecca, Jack?") and writer of motion picture comedies like the Inspector Clouseau farce, "A Shot in the Dark." Who knew from scary?

When I saw the novel’s early reviews (Newsday: “One of the most terrifying stories since 'Dracula!'”), for a time I found myself prematurely in that unbalanced and “tricky age” for writers of comedy described by the great James Thurber in his rollicking "A Preface to My Life," as a period “when they take to calling their office from their home, or their home from their office, asking for themselves, and then collapsing in hard-breathing relief upon being told they ‘were not in.’”

Yes. Confusion had made its masterpiece!

Oh well, sure: every year on the date I put out the pumpkin with the cutout eyes and nose and face and the basket full of Snickers and
Mars Bars beside it; but I do keep wishing – oh, ever so wistfully and – let’s face it, hopelessly – that "The Exorcist" be remembered at this time of the year for being not about shivers but rather about souls, for then it would indeed be in the real and true spirit of Halloween, which is short for the eve of All Hallows or All Saints Day.

When I first heard, in 1949, of an actual case of demonic possession and an exorcism going on nearby while I was a junior at Georgetown University, I remember thinking, “Someday, somebody’s got to write about this, because if an investigation were to prove that possession is real, what a help it would be to the struggling faith of possibly millions, for if there were demons, I reasoned, then why not angels? Why not God?"

While there was one particularly striking and constantly repeated paranormal phenomenon in the 1949 case, plus a letter from the exorcist in the case assuring me that the case “was the real thing; I had no doubt about it then and I have no doubt about it now,” I in fact did not base my novel on the 1949 case, but rather what my research made clear; namely, that in every period of recorded history, and in every culture and part of the world, there have been consistent accounts of possession and its symptoms going all the way back to ancient Egyptian chronicles, and where there is that much smoke, my reason told me, there is probably fire – and a lot of it, if you get my meaning. Do you? My faith is strong.

Muslims File Complaint over Christian Symbols at Catholic University

The Washington, D.C. Office of Human Rights confirmed that it is investigating allegations that Catholic University violated the human rights of Muslim students by not allowing them to form a Muslim student group and by not providing them rooms without Christian symbols for their daily prayers.

The investigation alleges that Muslim students “must perform their prayers surrounded by symbols of Catholicism – e.g., a wooden crucifix, paintings of Jesus, pictures of priests and theologians which many Muslim students find inappropriate.”

A spokesperson for the Office of Human Rights told Fox News they had received a 60-page complaint against the private university. The investigation, they said, could take as long a six months.

The complaint was filed by John Banzhaf, an attorney and professor at George Washington University Law School. Banzhaf has been involved in previous litigation against the school involving the same-sex residence halls. He also alleged in his complaint involving Muslim students that women at the university were being discriminated against. You can read more on those allegations by clicking here.

Banzhaf said some Muslim students were particularly offended because they had to meditate in the school’s chapels “and at the cathedral that looms over the entire campus – the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.”

“It shouldn’t be too difficult somewhere on the campus for the university to set aside a small room where Muslims can pray without having to stare up and be looked down upon by a cross of Jesus,” he told Fox News.

A spokesman for Catholic University released a statement to Fox News indicating they had not seen any legal filings — but would respond once they do.

“Our faithfulness to our Catholic tradition has also made us a welcome home to students of other religions,” said Victor Nakas, associate vice president for public affairs. “No students have registered complaints about the exercise of their religions on our campus.”

In a 2010 interview with National Public Radio, university president John Garvey acknowledged that they don’t set aside prayer rooms for Muslim students.

“We make classrooms available, or our chapels are places where they can pray,” he told NPR. “We don’t offer Halal meat, although there are always meals that conform to Halal regulations, that allow students to do what they want.”

Banzhaf said that it is technically not illegal for Catholic University to refuse to provide rooms devoid of religious icons.

“It may not be illegal, but it suggests they are acting improperly and probably with malice,” he said. “They do have to pray five times a day, they have to look around for empty classrooms and to be sitting there trying to do Muslim prayers with a big cross looking down or a picture of Jesus or a picture of the Pope is not very conductive to their religion.”

As for the creation of a Muslim student group, Banzhaf said the university has an association of Jewish students – so why not a Muslim group?

“I think they are entitled as a matter of law to be able to form a Muslim student association and to have the same privileges as associations,” he said. “I think that most of them would much prefer to have a place to pray – that they are not surrounded by various Catholic symbols – a place that is more conductive to their religious beliefs than being surrounded by pictures of Popes.”

Garvey, in his 2010 interview with NPR, addressed that issue.

“It’s just not something that we view as an activity that we want to sponsor because we’re a Catholic institution rather than Muslim,” he said.

Patrick Reilly, the president of the Cardinal Newman Society, an organization that promotes Catholic identity among Catholic schools, seemed stunned by the complaint.

“I don’t know what the attorney wants them to do – if he wants them to actually move the Basilica or if the Muslim students can find someplace where they don’t have to look at it,” he told Fox News.

Catholic University, he said, is a Catholic institution.

“One wouldn’t expect a Jewish institution to be responsible for providing liturgical opportunities for other faiths and I wouldn’t expect a Catholic institution to do that,” he said.

“This attorney is really turning civil rights on its head,” he said. “He’s using the law for his own discrimination against the Catholic institution and essentially saying Catholic University cannot operate according to Catholic principles.”

Leaflets Dropped on Occupy Chicago

"We are Wall Street. It’s our job to make money. Whether it’s a commodity, stock, bond, or some hypothetical piece of fake paper, it doesn’t matter. We would trade baseball cards if it were profitable. I didn’t hear America complaining when the market was roaring to 14,000 and everyone’s 401k doubled every 3 years. Just like gambling, its not a problem until you lose. I’ve never heard of anyone going to Gamblers Anonymous because they won too much in Vegas.

Well now the market crapped out, & even though it has come back somewhat, the government and the average Joes are still looking for a scapegoat. God knows there has to be one for everything. Well, here we are.

Go ahead and continue to take us down, but you’re only going to hurt yourselves. What’s going to happen when we can’t find jobs on the Street anymore? Guess what: We’re going to take yours. We get up at 5am & work till 10pm or later. We’re used to not getting up to pee when we have a position. We don’t take an hour or more for a lunch break. We don’t demand a union. We don’t retire at 50 with a pension. We eat what we kill, and when the only thing left to eat is on your dinner plates, we’ll eat that.

For years teachers and other unionized labor have had us fooled. We were too busy working to notice. Do you really think that we are incapable of teaching 3rd graders and doing landscaping? We’re going to take your cushy jobs with tenure and 4 months off a year and whine just like you that we are so-o-o-o underpaid for building the youth of America. Say goodbye to your overtime and double time and a half. I’ll be hitting grounders to the high school baseball team for $5k extra a summer, thank you very much.

So now that we’re going to be making $85k a year without upside, Joe Mainstreet is going to have his revenge, right? Wrong! Guess what: we’re going to stop buying the new 80k car, we aren’t going to leave the 35 percent tip at our business dinners anymore. No more free rides on our backs. We’re going to landscape our own back yards, wash our cars with a garden hose in our driveways. Our money was your money. You spent it. When our money dries up, so does yours.

The difference is, you lived off of it, we rejoiced in it. The Obama administration and the Democratic National Committee might get their way and knock us off the top of the pyramid, but it’s really going to hurt like hell for them when our fat asses land directly on the middle class of America and knock them to the bottom.

We aren’t dinosaurs. We are smarter and more vicious than that, and we are going to survive. The question is, now that Obama & his administration are making Joe Mainstreet our food supply…will he? and will they?”

The Episcopal Church's Schism and Disputes over Properties

Mollie Ziegler Hemingway on the Episcopal Church's schism and its disputes with Anglicans over church property.

Katharine Jefferts Schori
Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Churh

When the Church of the Good Shepherd in Binghamton, N.Y., left the Episcopal Church over disagreements about what the Bible says about sexuality, the congregation offered to pay for the building in which it worshiped. In return the Episcopal Church sued to seize the building, then sold it for a fraction of the price to someone who turned it into a mosque.

The congregation is one of hundreds that split or altogether left the Episcopal Church—a member of the Anglican Communion found mostly in the United States—after a decades-long dispute over adherence to scripture erupted with the consecration of a partnered gay bishop in 2003. But negotiating who gets church buildings hasn't been easy. Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori said she'd rather have these properties become Baptist churches or even saloons than continue as sanctuaries for fellow Anglicans.

The Episcopalian congregations that want to break away are part of a larger movement of Anglicans world-wide who are concerned by the liberalism of the official New York-based Episcopal Church on sexuality and certain basic tenets such as Jesus' resurrection. Of the 38 provinces in the global Anglican Communion, 22 have declared themselves in "broken" or "impaired" fellowship with the more liberal American church.

In 2009, breakaway Episcopalians in the U.S. and Canada formed the Anglican Church in North America, which now reports 100,000 members in nearly 1,000 congregations. This group has been formally recognized by some Anglican primates outside of the United States.

Bishop Jefferts Schori says this new Anglican group is encroaching on her church's jurisdiction, and she has authorized dozens of lawsuits "to protect the assets of the Episcopal Church for the mission of the Episcopal Church." The Episcopal Church has dedicated $22 million to legal actions against departing clergy, congregations and dioceses, according to Allan Haley, a canon lawyer who has represented a diocese in one such case.

Now the Episcopal Church has upped the ante: It has declared that if congregations break away and buy their sanctuaries, they must disaffiliate from any group that professes to be Anglican.

Rather than agree to this demand to disaffiliate from Anglicanism, Pittsburgh's All Saints Episcopal Anglican Church last month walked away from the building it had inhabited since 1928. The congregation called the Episcopal Church's demand "mean-spirited" and an attempt to deny "the freedom of religious affiliation."

Some other Episcopalians have opted to disaffiliate rather than lose their buildings or spend years in expensive litigation. Two breakaway congregations in Pennsylvania and two in Virginia have promised they will not affiliate with other Anglicans for five years.

For Anglicans, affiliation with a bishop is essential to their identity and to being part of a church. A disaffiliation clause means that bishops can't make their annual congregational visits to perform baptisms, confirmations and other rites integral to the life of the church, and they can't encourage or discipline priests. The congregation meanwhile can't work with local and national church bodies on disaster relief, youth retreats or educational seminars. Clergy members' insurance and pensions are uncertain. And congregations can't advertise that they are Anglican or contribute the traditional 10% tithe to the local branch of their denomination.

"It's unconscionable for a Christian to impose such a condition on a fellow Christian, telling them who they can and can't worship with and who they can and can't affiliate with. That violates every Christian precept I know of," said Mr. Haley, citing St. Paul's admonition against Christians suing each other in secular courts.

"We can't sell to an organization that wants to put us out of business," said Bishop Jefferts Schori, who added that her job is to ensure that "no competing branch of the Anglican Communion impose on the mission strategy" of the Episcopal Church. Indeed she has no complaint with Muslims, Baptists or barkeepers buying Episcopal properties—only fellow Anglicans.

The archbishop of the break-away Anglican Church in North America, Robert Duncan, says his group has no interest in replacing the Episcopal Church. He says he has encouraged participation with Episcopal Dioceses and recently blessed a priest who wanted to return to the Episcopal Church.

Bishop Duncan says that while the ongoing litigation over property is "unseemly and scandalous," the new disaffiliation clauses are even worse: "You can ask me to give away what I have and I'll give it away. But don't demand of me that I abandon the tenets of my faith."
